Here at the Breakthrough Retreats we aim to keep our remedies simple yet effective. Our emphasis is on tried and tested methods for rebalancing the body’s energy and refocusing the mind.



Nestling in the heart of South Down at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, our Retreat Centre; The Briers is an 18th Century 3 star Country house that has been recently renovated to the highest standards by new owner Maureen.

The breath-taking views, spacious and comfortable rooms, and a home from home welcome make this a truly unique experience.  Although less than 20mins walk from the centre of Newcastle, once you arrive at The Briers you can feel the stresses and strains of modern day life fade away as you enter this oasis of calm, in the midst of stunning countryside. It is the perfect country house and retreat centre.

Walking is one of the best natural energisers around. It boosts circulation and increases oxygen supply to every cell in your body. It’s true – exercise boosts your mood. Studies show that a brisk walk is just as effective as antidepressants in mild to moderate cases of depression, releasing feel-good endorphins while reducing stress and anxiety. So for positive mental health, walking is an absolute must. Our guided walks are a way to energise the body and heighten self-awareness, they will leave you invigorated and refreshed as you soak up the stunning natural beauty that exists here.




The latest studies are showing a definite link between what we eat and how we think and feel. Our ‘gut health’ is most definitely our ‘mental health’.

The ‘clean-eating’ programme will provide you with an opportunity to kick-start a new health regime or simply rest from the toxins of modern day processed food. 


We will provide instruction on how to incorporate the latest enthusiasm for Juicing into your day-to-day lifestyle. Our daily meals centre on wholefood and superfoods, organic and locally sourced where possible.


There will be a chance to go wheat free, dairy free and sugar free!








Yoga is not just a workout it is a lifestyle. The practice of yoga allows us to be still in a world consumed with chaos. Yoga’s deep breathing and meditative aspects help foster an inner shift from stress and anxiety to peace and tranquility. Join our experienced yoga teacher for classes that will still your mind and calm your emotions.


Mindfulness / Meditation


From sports players to CEOs, from Hollywood stars to politicians, everyone seems to be talking about being more ‘mindful’ these days. But what exactly is it? Jon Kabat Zinn defines it as “an awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, in a non-judgmental way, as if your life depended on it.

The benefits of mindfulness are all encompassing ranging from relieving stress, lowering blood pressure, reducing chronic pain, improving sleep, to reducing the effects of anxiety stress and depression.


Sessions are led by an experienced teacher who will gently guide you through techniques which can be easily incorporated into your daily life after the retreat.

Along with the activities mentioned above this provides you with yet another opportunity to balance body, mind and spirit. Arrival and Departure

Guests arrive on Friday afternoon between 4 and 5pm , in time for the first Stretch and Relax yoga class, and depart after an lunch on Sunday, at approx 3pm.
